Then go. (a review of You Were Made for a God-Sized Dream)

And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.
Acts 2:17 (NIV)

I’ve adored words and ideas ever since I was a little girl growing up in my grandparents’ bookstore. I feel grateful every day that my God-sized dream to be a writer actually came true…” So writes author Holley Gerth about her love of words and her mission to nurture the dreams and the hearts of women. I knew about her but didn’t get to know her until she reached across the country and through the depths of cyberspace to invite me to play on her team, the God-Sized Dream Team. Now she’s written a new book, a playbook for all the dreamers out there intended to talk us off the ledges, out of our shells, beyond the confines of our comfort zones and into the “More that Matters Most.”

If you’ve ever felt a tug on your heart to do more, you’ve got to read this book. Holley reminds us of a time in our lives when dreaming was our job. She challenges us to consider why we stopped, how to dream again, to acknowledge that within each and every one of us lives God-Sized Dreams, and how to make them a reality.

More than just a feel-good read, (which wouldn’t be a bad thing),  this book is practical, tactical, and inspiring. But more than just inspirational, Holley writes clearly about what to do with those dreams.  She writes,
It can seem presumptuous to decide on a destination. We pray “Lord I’ll go wherever you want me to go.” Then we sit in the car with the gear on neutral and our hands locked on the steering wheel, waiting for further instructions.  A few times in Scripture, God speaks to people when they’re in this position.  But most of the time He meets them along the way and redirects them.”

You don’t even have to be certain of your dream. All she asks is that you listen…”to that desire in your heart that won’t go away.” I most love that the book has a map for realizing those dreams, including Go Deeper Guides, tools to help you frame your dream step-by-step including identifying obstacles, naming your strengths and skills, literally a blueprint from where you are right now to that place God has called you.

By the time you’ve turned the final page, you are changed. And if that’s not enough, Holley leads you to the throne in prayer, commissioning you to go forth, finally gently nudging you forward with “Go get ‘em, friend.”

I was blessed to read this book. I encourage you to step out in faith; read the book. Buy an extra copy for someone you know struggling with the “more you were made for.”
Then, as my friend Holley writes, GO.
