Joy in your now…

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
Therefore do not worry
Mark 6:28-31 (ESV)

Are you happy? Does everything in your life feel good right now? Really? Or, like someone I just talked to, are you beaten down by the weight of it all? If you let your arms fall, just for a second, and the entire world DID NOT COME CRASHING DOWN, after a minute, would you put your arms back up? No you wouldn’t. NO, you wouldn’t.

C
an you imagine harnessing the power of joy in your now? Everything is not perfect, and even as you look at someone else’s situation, it’s not perfect either. There are problems; you just don’t know them. “Joy in your now” is about perspective. Let me tell you a story…

It was a blue and rainy Monday. I didn’t bicker so much with my children about getting up and out the door. The dog walked me just over a mile as storm clouds cleared; he and I had a pleasant time and didn’t get wet. My migraine is only in 2nd gear, my mildly arthritic and sports-injured knee hurts less, and when I look at my garden beds, despite the overall forlorn appearance of my yard, my daffodils are breaking through the ground. By all rights, I have every reason to be ticked off, frustrated, or depressed. However, the emergence of pale green and yellow shoots through the mulch (that needs replacing) brings me joy, and tunes me in to the voice of the One, whom I clearly hear saying, “consider the lilies of the field...” (Mark 6:28-31) Lord, I thank You.

My daffodils are breaking through. My daffodils are breaking through. It almost feels like magic but better, because there is neither smoke nor mirrors. My daffodils are breaking through. Spring returns. What seemed dead prepares to rise again. The earth is being restored, like after Noah’s flood, and I know it is well with my soul.

Faith in God will not suddenly make everything perfect. Faith can (does) change the world, but that’s not “joy in your now.” Joy in your now is about Faith changing you.

Would you like some joy in your now? It isn’t hard. Daily, a greater sense of gratitude washes over me. It happens regularly, as I have become intentional about living every day as if it is the last. I am not afraid-just focused, and so very grateful. We walked through a valley; we don't know when or whether we'll come through, but we know we have never been alone. I am, we are, rested.

Lord,
I give up; no mas, I’m tired…make that exhausted. This isn’t working. You say” do not worry.”
I say, “okay. I choose better. I choose You.”
In Jesus name, let it be so.
Amen.

Today’s lesson-Seek joy. Immediately.
