Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over
them—not because you
must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not
pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being
examples to the flock. And
when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will
never fade away.
In the same
way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe
yourselves with humility toward one another, because,
“God opposes the
proud
but shows favor to the humble.”
but shows favor to the humble.”
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand,
that he may lift you up in due time.
1 Peter 5:2-6 (N IV)

My husband and I were discussing
The Five Love Languages, by Gary
Chapman this weekend. As an “acts of
service” guy, praying on this 24th consecutive day that he would
grow in humility, be a good shepherd and a good steward is easy. Remember, he was born
with a mustache, and has a natural affinity for taking care. And no, he doesn’t need an S on his chest…he
expects to do (well) what he does.
According to Chapman, for those
who love via acts of service “they are thinking, “Cut the talk. If you loved me, you would do something…” He’s not that brusque, but that’s who he is,
and how he loves.
After nearly 19 years of
marriage, you’d better know what you know, and know whom you’re with…As we were
preparing for our wedding, there was purportedly a conversation between my then
intended and my adoring daddy (God rest his soul), wherein daddy confessed his
satisfaction at our upcoming nuptials as I was the kind of women who needed
looking after. I choose not to be
demeaned or in any way insulted by the characterization…ultimately, daddy was
right. I needed someone who would
treasure and secure me, giving me just what I needed to spread my wings and
soar. Daddy knew best.
I have been blessed to have extraordinary,
Godly, loving men in my life since my first day on the planet. It is a gift I give, with pride, to both my
daughter AND my son. Once again, I say,
my cup runneth over. Once again, I say,
God is good.
